Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is nerve damage caused by the prolonged effects of elevated blood sugar on peripheral nerves and the small blood vessels that supply them. It's the most common complication of diabetes — research indicates close to half of all people with diabetes will develop it at some point, with risk increasing the longer someone has had diabetes and how well blood sugar has been controlled over time. Symptoms typically begin in the feet and progress upward — numbness, tingling, burning, or a sensation of walking on cotton. For many patients, the most frustrating part isn't the sensation itself, but being told there's little to do beyond managing blood sugar and waiting to see how things progress.

Do I need to stop seeing my endocrinologist or primary care doctor?
